Just watched Pariyerum Perumal in amazon prime! I read so much about the movie, so had lot of expectations about it.
As i watched the movie, it did bring the tamilnadu village in front of our eyes. Like Jo in the movie, i was clueless about the caste obsession in our country. i have read about it, seen a few movies about it. But reading it innewspapers registers in one part of brain. And the few movies i have seen are herocentric, and the caste issue would become one other tool to show the heroism. This movie was much more realistic. It did not use casteism for preaching or making the hero look good. It just showed the mirror and it is chilling. Is this what our country is? Fanatic about caste! i have seen many movies deal with this issue. I remember seeing NH10, where man from the village ask the urban heroine, what's her name. When she tells her name, he asks for full name with caste identify. Citified heroine is clueless and when she realizes how strong the caste feeling is, she is shocked. I too found it scary! I was proud to be a south indian, where we removed that surname which identifies our caste.
In spite of not having caste name in your name, we still are seeped in caste feelings. How many ilavarasans are going to be killed? when i saw the hero beaten and left on the railway track to die, i could see the reality glaring on my face! No wonder people prefer staying back in cities where such caste identities are lost in the crowd. But if i remember right, in Hyderabad, one young couple was attacked in the name of caste!
Why are we obsessed about caste! if we cut, all of us bleed red only! not in different color. if our country has caste as an issue, then its racism in another place. Human beings are never treated equal in any country! Sad reality indeed!
Hats off to the director for presenting a sensitive issue in the right manner! And kudos to the actors. But such movies, will it make a difference to people who matter? They need to change from inside! will it happen?
